Using Weight Training Equipment For Other Sports

Weight training equipment is not just for weight lifters or competitive body building. In fact, strength training is something that all athletes should consider – in fact, anyone concerned with health and physical fitness has plenty of reason to pursue strength training.

Weight training is a specific form of strength training that uses weights and gravity to strengthen the muscles of the person practicing it. Essentially, the more weight you have on the bar or grip you are holding, the harder the force of gravity will be, and the harder your muscles will have to work to perform the specific motion you are doing.

Because everyone benefits from having stronger muscles, weight training equipment has something for everyone. This can be an even better advantage if you are training for a specific sport. Athletes who need large amounts of upper body strength and dexterity, or considerable force, solidity, and propulsion in their lower body can both use this training to help achieve these goals.

For example, a basketball player needs strong shoulders and arms to shoot the ball with control and velocity. But they also need strong legs for running across the court, and powerful calf muscles for jump shots.

In addition to basketball drills to actually practice shooting, and running exercises to actually practice speed and endurance on the court, a basketball player can use weight training equipment like free weights or a weight machine to build strength that will help in both of these regards.

So if a basketball player wanted to use weight machines to strengthen his or her leg muscles, they could work on leg extensions and leg presses. Then they could switch to free weights to do weighted knee bends. Free weights could be used for a variety of curls to work on upper body strength, and machine-style weight training equipment could also be used to strengthen the shoulders in a number of different ways.

The possibilities for weight training are endless. The body can move in a variety of ways, and needs variety and repetition to really build strength and muscle over time. Whether for sport or health, competition or just for fun, weight training equipment is a great way to get there.
